The score is tied and its third and goal on the eight yard line. With under a minute left in the game between the cross-county Fairview WY high school rivals, this means the players will give everything they’ve got. Bragging rights for a whole year are on the line, and the victorious players will be heroes for at least this week. The ball is snapped, the quarterback steps back, and throws the ball high and hard to the wide receiver. The next thing we see are two players laying on the ground, not moving.

A hush descends on the stands. The trainers run out onto the field. One trainer waves to the ambulance attendants to come over so the players can go to the hospital for further evaluation. Both boys get to their feet, and slowly make it to the ambulance; which rolls off the field to cheers from the fans. During football season, somewhere in WY, that scene is played out in one form or another every week.

Now many times, the injuries are slight. Sometimes you have a broken arm or leg or collar bone, but sometimes you have a concussion. This means that the impact between the two players caused one of them to hit hard enough so their brain hit the inside of their skull. Even with padding and helmets, these injuries still take place on a regular basis in Fairview Wyoming.

With a mild concussion the victim will suffer a headache and maybe even some other initial signs of a concussion including blurred vision, confusion or even immediate amnesia. However, after the brain has a day or so to recover, the injury may be virtually unnoticeable. The expenses for the ER visit, and whatever medications that get prescribed are generally covered by the school’s insurance policy.

However, one must be aware that even in the case of a mild concussion, especially if it’s a repeated concussion, recovery may not be that simple. Players who have suffered multiple concussions over their playing careers are at risk of having more than the usual risk of traumatic brain injury in Fairview Wyoming. Given enough time to recover, the brain is fine. But if it gets concussed often enough, quick enough, the brain doesn’t get that recovery time, and can be injured worse than the impact or initial examination would suggest. Sometimes, these cumulative effects don’t even manifest themselves until days or years after the events have taken place.

Persistent headaches, tingling in the extremities, slurring of the speech and even hallucinations can signal a very real and very deep brain injury that needs to be treated. But since this is only caught after the fact, can these expenses be borne by Fairview WY schools as well?

Without good legal representation to protect the patient’s rights and interests, many times the parents of the player are forced to bear the expense, or at least the expense of the deductibles on their insurance, plus whatever expenses the insurance won’t cover. But by having Fairview attorneys available that understand brain injuries, and also understand the complicated issues involved, compensation for those injuries can be paid by the proper party. Granted, playing football does have its dangers. Driving people to bankruptcy shouldn’t be one of them.
